In the early months of 2020 I researched every preschool in the area to choose the perfect one for my son. I really felt like it was time for him to be in a learning environment and knew it would be a great way for him to bond with other kids. I was so excited for him but now I find myself asking… should we send our toddlers to preschool this year?
Artie has never been in daycare so this would just be a baby step, only 2 days a week for 4 hours each day. He is the first born in our family so he doesn’t have any cousins or siblings. I knew preschool would be the perfect way for him to build relationships with kids his age.
Then the pandemic happened and the entire country shut down.
Now that things have reopened I still don’t take him many places, no errands or unnecessary outings.
The one thing I do feel like is necessary for him (and all children) is to interact with other kids his age. I don’t want to put him at risk but I also don’t want his social development to be affected long term. He has already missed out on so much during this pandemic.
I believe preschool with small class sizes is the safest way for him to have regular interaction with other children. He will see the same few kids every week and his teachers will wash their hands and clean surfaces constantly.
On the other hand, can we really be too careful right now? I mean, it isn’t really possible to enforce social distancing and masks for two and three year olds.
I’ve gone back and forth on this for the past few weeks. I guess all I can do is trust my instincts and make the best choice I can for our family.
I want to hear from YOU… what do you think? Should we send our toddlers to preschool this year? Let me know in the comments!
