Growing up I was one of those people who could eat whatever they wanted without gaining any weight. Sure, it was great at the time, but led to some horrible eating habits. So what was the one thing that held me back from a healthy lifestyle?
Instead of having apple slices with almond butter I was having Doritos and a milkshake. I’m sure you aren’t surprised to hear that it didn’t take long for these unhealthy eating habits to catch up to me.
I started gaining weight shortly after I started college and it took over a decade for me to really commit to a healthy lifestyle. After years of weight gain and loss, fad diets followed by binge eating, I finally realized there was only one thing holding me back from living a healthy lifestyle.
Call it laziness, call it poor time management if you want… but I am not ashamed to admit that the one thing that held me back from a healthy life style was CONVENIENCE.
I can’t count the number of times I stocked my refrigerator with fruits and veggies, with every intention of making salads, smoothies, and well balanced meals. Sometimes I did great for a few days, but it never lasted.
It wasn’t that I didn’t like the food, or didn’t think it was important. I was always on the go and just didn’t have the time… and honestly sometimes I just didn’t feel like putting forth the extra effort.
I went through this pattern so many times in my twenties. I had great intentions but never really had the follow through.
Then I became a mom and everything changed. My health suddenly became more important than ever but there was still something holding me back from committing. It’s true… convenience is not always cost efficient, but paying a little extra for pre-sliced fruit makes a lot more sense than throwing out a bowl of untouched produce. There may be healthier, fresher options but grabbing a smoothie from my fridge makes a lot more sense than having Doritos as my snack instead.
Discovering what was holding me back and making these simple changes has completely changed how I look and feel. I can see the difference when I look in the mirror, not just my body but also my hair and skin.
More importantly I FEEL so much better! I am more focused and have more energy than I ever did before. I’ve made changes that I can stick to and have even started a workout regimen!
